Is political freedom the only kind of liberty we need? Rear Admiral Barry C. Black (Ret.), Chaplain to the U.S. Senate, addresses this issue in a special Independence Day program, which aired on July 3, 2011. In this message, Black says that there are two kinds of people in this world: those who are in bondage to sin, and those who have been set free. He teaches that sin is an equal opportunity destroyer. It doesn’t care if we call ourselves Americans and claim liberty as one of our highest values. No matter what kind of government system you live under, if you are a slave to sin, you are not truly free. As Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”In order to be free indeed, Black says we must do four things: 1. Begin with Jesus. 2. Read God’s word. 3. Don’t be ignorant of our bondage. 4. Avoid false freedom. Are you free from the bonds of sin? Be sure today. Black became the 62nd Senate Chaplain on Jun 27, 2003, concluding 27 years of service in the U.S. Navy. He is the author of his autobiography entitled, From the Hood to the Hill and The Blessing of Adversity.
